The Aguacate dam was severely affected by Tropical Storm Noel and Olga in 2007, rendering it out of service since then. It is the second hydroelectric project on the Nizao River and one of the primary producers of electricity in the Dominican Republic, benefiting 592,667 residents of the municipality of Cambita (San Cristóbal).
AIN active has analyzed the current state, studied different proposals for action, and carried out supervision work for the rehabilitation works.
The dam is a mass concrete gravity dam with a height of 51.50 meters and a crown length of 194 meters. From the left bank of the dam, the diversion tunnel extends, with a length of 3,803 meters and a diameter of 4.5 meters. At the end of this tunnel is the Aguacate Hydroelectric Power Plant, which has an installed capacity of 60 MW, composed of two Francis turbines (vertical axis), each with a capacity of 30 MW. The gross head is 357 meters, and the design flow rate is 34 m³/s. The average annual energy production is 171.01 GWh.
