Structural Calculation of the Stormwater Tank in Negreira

AIN active has performed the structural calculation and verification of the stormwater tank located in Negreira, on a plot near the facilities of the current E.D.A.R. (Wastewater Treatment Plant) near the Barcala River channel.

The stormwater tank consists of the following parts:

  • In-line chamber

  • Off-line retention chamber

  • Relief chamber

  • Roughing chambers

  • Pumping chamber

  • Valve chamber

Regarding the geometry, it has a roughly rectangular footprint with representative exterior dimensions of approximately 33.8 m in length and 20.0 m in width. The height of the walls in the main basin is 6.50 m; 9.0 meters in the roughing chambers, pumping well, and valve chamber; and 3.20 meters in the relief chamber.

The modeling was carried out using the Midas Civil 2013 software.

In order to make the behavior of the model as close as possible to that of the actual structure, a 3D model was generated using hybrid rectangular sheet-type elements.

For the dimensioning of the structure, the following procedure was followed:

  • Obtaining forces

  • Reinforcement dimensioning (Ultimate Limit State – ULS)

    • ULS Bending – Composite

      • Minimum reinforcement quantities

      • Calculation of required bending reinforcement

    • Ultimate Limit State (ULS) Shear check

      • Verification of shear resistance capacity of concrete section without reinforcement

      • Calculation of required shear reinforcement

    • Serviceability Limit State (SLS) check

      • SLS Cracking check

      • Verification of stresses in foundation slabs
